CENTREVILLE — Compass Regional Hospice celebrated its 35th anniversary in December with some big news. It has changed its name to Compass, to encapsulate its services — hospice care, supportive care and grief services — and marked the completion of renovations to the in-patient hospice center in Centreville.

“Over the years, our services have expanded but our mission has remained the same — providing care and support to patients and families facing a life-limiting diagnosis or loss,” Compass said in a news release. “We’ve evolved to meet the ever-changing needs of our community, and after careful thought, have revised our brand to better reflect our full range of services. We chose to keep the compass imagery, as it reflects our mission to guide patients and their loved ones after a life-limiting diagnosis, and showing individuals healthy ways to manage their grief.”

In 1985, Hospice of Queen Anne’s was started by a team of volunteers led by founder, Mildred Barnette. This dedicated group was on a mission to ensure that local families facing a life-limiting diagnosis had the support and education that they needed to live out their days with dignity, comfort, peace and joy.

This vision has grown Compass’ volunteer efforts into a multidisciplinary, tri-county provider. Therefore, as Compass wraps up renovations to the in-patient hospice center, the board is thrilled to announce the renaming of this facility. Naming rights were offered to a generous donor who helped make the renovation possible. They elected to honor Compass founder, Mildred Barnette, titling the now 10-bed residential center “The Barnette Center.”

“Mildred has continued to work with and support our mission through the last 35 years of evolution. She knows first-hand the privilege and sacrifice that has come with growing this organization, and we are so grateful to be able to honor her legacy in this way,” the news release stated.

Since opening its doors in 2008, The Barnette Center has provided a comfortable, home-like, and medically supportive alternative to in-home care. A team of experienced and caring professionals provide patients with 24/7 care to support the patients’ physical, emotional and spiritual needs.

The facility’s location is central to all residents in Caroline, Kent and Queen Anne’s counties. In addition to patient rooms, the center includes a dining room, living room, chapel and gazebo overlooking the serenity garden.
