You know, it is never officially a Bears offseason unless we are talking about the quarterback position.
Every year the Bears try to find a new person off the street to pretend to play quarterback. Whether it’s overreaching in the draft to get a less-than-serviceable quarterback or never having a stable quarterback since Jay Cutler (Rex Grossman maybe … I don’t even want to think about that) the Bears need to be thinking about who will fill Mitch Trubisky’s spot.
Trubisky’s future is uncertain with Chicago and it is almost certain that the Bears will move on from him, as they should. I see the Bears going two different ways this offseason. They will either trade for Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson or they “tank” this season to obtain a better draft pick for the 2022 NFL draft.
Now, I love the idea of Watson coming to Chicago. The Bears will still have a quality defense with players like Khalil Mack, Roquan Smith, Eddie Jackson and Akiem Hicks. The Bears also have quality offensive players like Kyle Fuller, Darnell Mooney, emerging Cole Kmet and Allen Robinson if he decides to stay with Chicago this offseason. Trading for Watson would also rewrite all wrongs from the 2017 draft where the Bears drafted NVP (Nickelodeon’s most valuable player) Mitchell Trubisky second overall. Watson still has 7-10 prime years left of football in him, so why waste it on a Texans team with no defensive or offensive talent?
If the Bears decide to build for the future, then we will get the offseason so many are predicting on the condition we don’t get a serviceable quarterback. Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy will undoubtedly be fired and all of us Bears fans will be waiting in exile for a few years hoping some positives come out of it. If the Bears are going to rebuild they should get some inspiration from their Southside sports counterpart in the White Sox. As a fan I want them to stay competitive and sign Watson this offseason, but it is looking more likely to be the latter. Stay hopeful Bears fans, we are all in this together.
