The Redbirds soared past Western Illinois 85-55 to pick up their first road win of the young season. DeAnna Wilson made her Redbird debut, scoring 14 points for the team.
Illinois State women’s basketball sophomore DeAnna Wilson has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week Monday afternoon.
This is the first conference honor for Wilson and third honor for the Redbirds this season.
Wilson led ISU in scoring against Loyola-Chicago over the weekend. She led the way for ISU with 15.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game to help ISU finish the season on a five-game win streak.
After a quiet first half on Friday, Wilson put up 14 points in the second half to go along with five rebounds, one steal and one assist. The sophomore then put up a career-high 17 points against the Ramblers on Saturday while shooting 9-of-11 from the free-throw line and a team-high eight rebounds.
ISU heads into Hoops in the Heartland later this week as the No. 3 seed. They will face the No. 6 Loyola Ramblers for the third straight game at 8 p.m. Friday from the TaxSlayer Center in Moline. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and you can follow @Vidette_Sports on Twitter for live coverage throughout the tournament.
