Illinois State University's Graduate Workers Union has moved into a strike readiness phase as negotiations with a federal mediator and university officials continue. The union is holding a sit-in Wednesday morning in President Larry Dietz's office.

For the second portion of Illinois State University’s Graduate Workers Union’s two-day teach-in, the union will host a sit-in at 8 a.m. Wednesday in President Larry Dietz’s office inside of Hovey Hall.

According to a press release, members from the group, GWU allies from the Student Government Association plan to visit Dietz in his office to request a meeting.

If Dietz will not meet with the students and GWU members, the group will hold a sit-in and wait for him.

Spokespersons from the union said “the meeting is of utmost importance, because negotiations have soured even in federal mediation, and Dietz recently expressed ‘shock and disappointment’ that the unionized workers would be discussing strike preparations.”

According to the press release, the action and the group’s two-day teach-in synchronize with ISU’s wellness days and emphasizes “‘real wellness instead of the fake wellness’ offered at ISU, which includes poverty wages and blatant disrespect for graduate workers.”

GWU and university officials have their next scheduled session with the mediator on March 18.
