Illinois State University's annual graphic design internship fair is planned for Tuesday morning in a virtual format. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon.

Illinois State University’s annual graphic design internship fair will be from 9:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday. This year, the event will be held virtually due to COVID-19.

The event is for students interested in pursuing a career in graphic design to gain professional practice experience in a safe way.

In order to participate, students must register in advance, must be majoring in graphic design and must be currently enrolled in or have completed the GD typography course or a course that is equivalent.

“I introduced the graphic design internship fair in 2017 because students needed real client work experience before graduation. The graphic design program always offered internships for talented and capable students and introduced them to community partners,” associate professor of graphic design Archana Shekara said.

“But I wanted our students to earn their internship by presenting their portfolio of work directly to their prospective clients.”

During the event, ISU students will have the opportunity to meet with potential clients from Illinois State and the Bloomington-Normal community. They will also have the chance to present their portfolio through Zoom.

The attire for the graphic design event is business casual clothing. Each student will be allowed 20 minutes to meet clients and present their portfolios.

“This experience will help students to develop critical skills, vocabulary and professionalism expected in the graphic design industry. Internships help students to understand the business of applied design, time management, soft skills and build a strong portfolio of work,” Shekara said.

There will be around 15 to 20 clients attending the virtual fair. The fair is around two to three hours. Students will present to about six clients.

“Clients are delighted to engage with students and select their intern. They look forward to attending the fair each semester and appreciate the opportunity to meet diverse talented student and have a conversation,” Shekara said.

“I am familiar with each client and their design expectations because we want our students to include their client designs in their portfolio. We meet as a class once a month where we discuss about progress, issues or concerns.”

Those students who gain an internship will be required to meet with Archana Shekara for monthly meetings from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

“I look forward to showcasing design students work to community partners, facilitate new opportunities for student engagement which helps them to understand the design process and profession beyond the classroom,” Shekara said.

More information about the graphic design internship fair can be found on the Illinois State events page or on the ISU fine arts website.
